Bike Check: Renny’s Naked CX

Renny’s spent the last year quietly accumulating a secret stash of weird parts, shiny bits, and paint supplies to put together this crazy 90’s inspired CX machine. For anyone who remembers 1993, special edition anodized parts, and anxiously waiting to drool over the newest paint scheme on the Klein Attitude, Renny’s bike will look immediately familiar. But under that paint, there’s a custom built Naked Bicycles X steel cyclocross bike from Sam Whittingham on Quadra Island and a carbon No.7 fork from Bloomington, Minnesota based Whiskey Parts Co., and a range of top end cross parts to make sure this bike looks 90’s, but rides like 2016.

So what’s on this bike? Renny’s rolling on Zed Wheelworks Pacenti SL23 rims on White Industries T11 road hubs, with a very custom alternating black/pink spoke nipple pattern, all put together by Victoria’s own Brad Head. Tubeless WTB Cross Boss 35’s offer extra volume to take on the Islands version of a cross course. The shiny pink comes courtesy of a wide range of small parts producers, mostly boutique American shops. Chris King is always a reliable source of fancy coloured metal bits, appearing here in the headset and spacers. Chico, CA based Paul Components provides their Neo-Retro canti brakes, paired with their Moon Unit cable carrier. Phil Wood provides the seat collar, holding in a Woodman Components seat post, a gift to Renny from Brad Head. The Woodman is as light as a Thompson Masterpiece and definitely the only place you can find an anodized pink seat post. The truly special bit, though, is the PRO Stealth Evo integrated bar-stem, which Renny has painted to match the frame. Holy crap.

SRAM covers the drivetrain, sadly not available in pink. Renny’s put together a 1×11 drivetrain made up of Rival shifters, with the left gutted and paddle removed to save weight, with a 11-30t CX1 cross-specific cassette and CX1 derailleur. All of which is driven by a SRAM Red crank, and 40t X-Sync chainring held on by extra high-zoot KCNC chainring bolts.

On Quadra you get Naked, in Minnesota it’s Whiskey.

SRAM’s cut enough out of their CX1 cassette that you can see the White Industries hub through it
